Rhodesian Ridgeback Information

Rhodesian Ridgeback is a large, muscular hound. The broad head is flat between the ears. Rhodesian Ridgeback has the eyes are round and are usually brown depending on the shade of the dog. Rhodesian Ridgeback can have a black, brown and light nose color. The coat of Rhodesian Ridgeback can be black or brown.

Rhodesian Ridgeback History:

The Rhodesian Ridgeback in spite of its name, is actually a South African breed. It was developed by the Boer farmers in the Cape Province in the 19th Century for hunting lion that preyed upon their cattle and sheep. Settlers to neighboring Zimbabwe (formerly Rhodesia) brought the dogs with them in 1876 and drew up the common which bore the name from the dog’s new homeland. Rhodesian Ridgeback Coat:

Coat is short, harsh for the touch and glossy
Probably the most striking feature in the breed is the ridge of hair that runs along the top rated of its back inside a path opposite to the rest from the coat. The ridge should really be symmetrical with whorls on either side, starting just behind the shoulders. The hairs of the ridge are mainly stiff
Color is often that of a lion: red or red wheaten
Minimal grooming

Rhodesian Ridgeback Health Concerns:

Cysts, named dermoid sinuses occasionally happen near the ridge. These need surgery. Quite a few vets suggest that puppies with these cysts be put to sleep
Hip dysplasia
Eyelid abnormalities such as ingrown lashes
